External venetian blind slats mounted outside a wide living-room window, tilted to stop the afternoon sun at the glass
External Venetian Blinds

Heat stopped at the glass, before it reaches the room

Aluminium venetians mounted outside the window — the most effective solar control there is, because the sun is intercepted before it ever gets indoors.

The physics, simply

An interior blind manages heat that has already entered the room. An external blind stops most of it at the glass. On a west-facing braai room or pyjama lounge with a full wall of glazing, the difference in how hard the aircon has to work is dramatic — it's the same principle European and high-end South African architects use to shade glass buildings, applied to a single elevation of an estate home.

What's actually fitted

Wide aluminium slats, typically in the 60–90mm class, run in guided side rails or cables and both tilt and raise like an interior venetian, just built for weather exposure. These systems are effectively always motorised, with a wind sensor as standard so the blind retracts itself automatically before a highveld gust or hailstorm can damage it — you don't need to be home to react.

Where they earn their keep in Mooikloof

Ridge-facing and view homes with hard west or north glass, architect-led renovations, and any owner who's said "the aircon can't keep up with that wall of glass" are the usual candidates. Because the system sits on the facade, we always talk finish and colour-match up front, and flag anything worth running past your estate's architectural guidelines before you commit.

Honest limitations

This is a premium, building-improvement spend rather than simple window dressing — it changes the visual read of the facade, needs proper fixing points, and is best planned at design stage though retrofit is possible on suitable elevations. It isn't a DIY product, and estates with strict aesthetic committees may want the finish approved before installation begins.
