Blockout stops light completely — the right call for bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms, and it doubles as an insulating layer against Pretoria's hot afternoons and cold highveld nights. Sunscreen fabric, typically 3% or 5% openness, cuts glare and UV while keeping the view through during the day — the default for any room facing the stable yard or the estate's open ground, where the view is exactly what you're paying for. Light-filtering fabric sits in between: full privacy, softened light, no view.

A double roller pairs blockout and sunscreen on one bracket — sunscreen down by day to hold the view and cut glare, blockout down at night for full privacy and dark. Where roller blinds win — and where they don't

They suit modern, open-plan estate homes, big glass, and everything from tight budgets to premium fabrics, and they're simple to keep clean. On very wide unbroken spans they need a join line unless motorised, and in more traditional or heritage-style rooms, timber venetian blinds often suit the aesthetic better.

What a roller blind costs on the estate

Guides worked by the square metre installed. Hand-operated rollers in blockout, sunscreen or a light-filtering weave price at R1,000 to R1,600, cheapest for plain blockout and dearest for a close sunscreen on view-facing glass or a double roller carrying both fabrics. Motorised, the guide is R2,500 to R3,800 including tube motor and control.

Two things skew that on a big stand. Wide glass is not the costly part per square metre — the little openings are, since bracket, tube and labour barely shrink, so anything tiny attracts a minimum. Where one wall is too wide for a single tube and takes a linked pair on one motor, that shows as its own line. The free measure fixes each figure in writing.
